A customer asked me about a series of disputed outages. It turned out he’d recently migrated from one DNS nameserver to another. We looked at the data, and saw some very interesting patterns. Let’s look at the sequence of events:

Yesterday we launched DNS Watch, sharing some continent-spanning infrastructure data we happened to notice a while back. Ideally, showing this information to the world will inspire some cleanup in the DNS-provider space.

You know, I could be wrong about a lot of things. But I’m guessing most of us, as I type this morning, are currently inhabiting the year 2025? Sure, there are outliers. Babies being born and such.

Whole new user interface, drastic back-end changes, improved redundancy…you know, the stuff that makes it fun to get up in the morning!

To know what? About your site going down. Or, in this case, ours. Sort of. My wife and I had plans for yesterday that definitely did not include my sitting in front of a computer.
